Natural elder, an essential tool in watchmaking 

Historically, elder was always a vital part of watchmakers' tool kits, thanks to its wide range of properties. For some years now, elder has disappeared from their workbenches, because of a production shortage. Several alternatives have been considered as a replacement, but none has been able to match the specific qualities of elder.

Today, we have reindustrialised the product, and are now able to offer you a multi-purpose tool incorporating elder pith.

Elder pith is a soft and light material found in the centre of the branches. It is particularly prized for its perfect texture, its adaptable shape and its absorption capacity. 

Elder pith is very soft, enabling it to be used for delicate cleaning without scratching surfaces. It can also help to clean off impurities, lubricant traces and finger marks.

Hence in watchmaking, it has a variety of applications:

-         Cleaning oil-pikes

-         Cleaning hands and indices

-         Cleaning escapement wheels: by inserting components in the elder pith and then rolling them to eliminate the impurities

-         Cleaning off ink 

-         etc.

Incorporated into a stylus for ease of use, elder is making its comeback on watchmakers' workbenches.
